La dentellière
This novel seems to have won the Goncourt Prize by taking Madame Bovary to the next step: not an ordinary woman having an affair, but a woman who goes beyond ordinariness, who has a hole at her center, unemotional, obedient, accepting. The novel focuses on her relationships with a woman and a man. Very simply written.
Cette grenade dans la main du jeune nègre est-elle une arme ou un fruit ?
"The Blond is a being apart.First Principle: She Knows It Second Principle: If you know that, you know everything, brother, I analyze
it thoroughly because it is one of America's most powerful fantasies. Something that lies at the heart of our wildest dreams, but this
object of desire remains the closest to light, a light that seems to illuminate it from the inside. This is what attracts the Negro (the
smell of milk), for my part, I would say that this kind of woman (blonde, long legs and thin and slightly scornful smile) constitutes the
personal failure of my life. "
After the worldwide success of his first novel, How to make love with a negro without getting tired, Dany Laferrière, hero of his
"American Autobiography" travels the roads of America for the purposes of a report.
Swallowing miles of highways, hectoliters of Coke, sitting on coach seats, taxis benches, public benches, on the terrace of fast-food
restaurants; penetrating the homes of average Americans, university campuses for kids of the rich, crossing the black ghettos and the golden
suburbs, our hero brings back from this journey a lot of anecdotes, tasty dialogues, stories of encounters, literary references, evocations
of memories.
and puts the reality of American myths to the test at every corner. How could the American dream not be for everyone? To believe the dark
eye that the Blonde - myth among all - throws to the young Negro who approaches it with a harmless fruit, there is perhaps something to
doubt a little.
Le Cri des oiseaux fous
Tenth novel of Dany Laferrière, The cry of the crazy birds is also the ultimate account of its vast American Autobiography.
The narrator learns that the Tontons Macoutes have killed his friend, that he himself is on the list, that tonight will be his last night in
Haiti, that of departure. The whole story flows from the eyes and thoughts, fears and meditations of this young man of twenty-three years
confronted with crime and forced into exile. His words are sometimes naive, sometimes lucid to the extreme. Tender too, like those of the
little boy of the charm of endless afternoons.
Finally, the silences of the book give way to the voodoo gods, came to incarnate in the dangerous penumbra of a brothel of Port-au-Prince.
Miroirs
Ô Jérusalem
This book recounts, moment by moment, the process that gave birth to the state of Israel. Collins & Lapierre weave a tapestry of shattered hopes, valor & fierce pride as the Arabs, Jews & British collide in their fight for control of Jerusalem. O Jerusalem! meticulously recreates this historic struggle. It penetrates the battle from the inside, exploring each party's interests, intentions & concessions as the city of their dreams teeters on the brink of destruction. From the Jewish fighters & their heroic commanders to the Arab chieftain whose death in battle doomed his cause along with the Mufti of Jerusalem's support for Hitler and the extermination of the Jews, but inspired a generation of Palestinians, O Jerusalem! tells the 3-dimensional story of this high-stakes, emotional conflict
Trafic d'armes
L'amazone fugitive
The Woman Who Rode Away is a brilliant anthology of highly allegorical and fabulous tales.
The title story is a kind of spiritual journey a woman embarks on to get free from the bonds of civilization.
“At thirty-three she really was still the girl from Berkeley, in all but physique. Her conscious development had stopped mysteriously with
her marriage, completely arrested. Her husband had never become real to her, neither mentally nor physically. In spite of his late sort of
passion for her, he never meant anything to her, physically. Only morally he swayed her, downed her, kept her in an invincible slavery.”
The Rocking-Horse Winner is a powerful parable of doom – there is a payment for everything in this world and a winner never takes
all.
The Man Who Loved Islands:
“He no longer worked at his book. The interest had gone. He liked to sit on the low elevation of his island, and see the sea; nothing but
the pale, quiet sea. And to feel his mind turn soft and hazy, like the hazy ocean. Sometimes, like a mirage, he would see the shadow of land
rise hovering to northwards. It was a big island beyond. But quite without substance.”
The older we get the colder becomes the climate of our feelings. The further we advance in age the more barren turns the soil of our
expectations. The longer we live the smaller grow the isles of our hopes. And one day we disappear.
Les chants de Maldoror et autres oeuvres
"Les Chants de Maldoror" is a book not to be reached for idly or consumed casually. No, it is a book to which one must devote his
whole person, offering a portion of the soul to its pages. Maldoror is a work that celebrates violence and cruelty, denying any goodness in
life while affirming its possibilities, its protagonist, a lone figure who stands in opposition to god, man, and all goodness.

La première nuit
In his second book, Marc Levy is revealing great discoveries from around the world through two simple people that hold the truth about the entire universe. But in the end, they seem to care more about their own lives and love, than about probably the greatest discovery of the world. This is a thing to consider more regarding our own lives and a lesson to learn. What are we going to choose: a great discovery that can bring sorrow or a normal life filled with happiness? Through his stories and his books, Marc Levy always has a lesson to give, a message to send and a story with an unexpected twist.
Si c'est un homme
It details Levi's journey from his home in Turin to Buchenwald. It is absolutely beautifully written. Levi's style of writing is unlike any other I've read. It is detailed, incredibly intelligent, moving, poignant, and in some way almost detached from his experience, which makes reading about it all the more moving and painful. To hear him describe the horrors he saw and went through in such a third-person sort of way is truly heart-breaking. All of his works are amazing, but this is the one that I recommend to all of my friends. I've bought several people copies of this book, because I feel it is that important. We must never forget what happened. And we must never allow it to happen again.
La ville de nulle part
Paul and Katherine a young couple newly arrived in Los Angeles from the ordered but restrained environs of Harvard are forced to reexamine everything that gave their life meaning back in the "real" world. Informed by a brilliant interpretation of East and West Coast lifestyles and attitudes, this novel is an insightful and tellingly funny account of marital dysfunction.
