L'écume des jours

By:
Boris Vian
Type:
Book
Year:
1996
Language:
French (France)
Estimated availability:

A crazy story featuring surprisingly modern love duets for postwar neologisms galore and an exaggerated caricature of social structures and currents of thought of the time. The characters evolve in a bright or glaucous environment, but always strange, according to a choreography as unpredictable as a jazz solo.
Colin's friend Chick is so obsessed with his compulsive adoration of Jean-Sol Partre (the romantic avatar of Sartre), he forgets all the rest, to the great despair of his fiancée Alise who will not hesitate not to retaliate in a big way.
Now, with time, the strangeness of the situations has assumed a dreamlike dimension and the varnish of rebellion has peeled off in favor of a poignant story of love and friendship. This universal theme created the legend of the novel, prompting the growing enthusiasm of readers.

An interesting fictional work imagining how the journey of soul continues after you die, when we reincarnate and when we stop, where souls gather after overcoming the barriers of the road to after-life and how we meet the different souls of our previous lives after the journey on Earth is over.

Sometimes making you convinced this might really be how it happens, sometimes feeling a little too simple, human-like and childish. Even without believing souls or the supernatural, it is nonetheless a great work of fiction that after reading makes you appreciate life and encourage to be a more helpful, better person

The story begins with an archeologist discovering a giant human bone buried underneath the Antartica. He believes that there was a mankind that was different from us in size, and they were 10 times larger than us. The first mankind lived in a island, and they constructed a highly-evolved society, and they made a miniature version of them, which is us, the current version of mankind. Eventually, the giant humans get extinct because of a gigantic tsunami after a collision of an astroid, and only the miniature version mankind survives because they were expelled from the island for being rebellious to the first mankind. Now, the second mankind are all over the Earth, and their world is rapidly developing and ruining the Earth at the same time. They even succeed in making a new mankind that is one tenth a size of them. At the same time, Earth is preparing for another sweep on mankind.

Passage des larmes

By:
Abdourahman A. Waberi
Type:
Book
Year:
2009
Language:
French (France)
Estimated availability:

Djibouti, a hot, impoverished little country on the Horn of Africa, is a place of great strategic importance, for off its coast lies a crucial passage for the world’s oil. In this novel by Abdourahman A. Waberi, Djibril, a young Djiboutian voluntarily exiled in Montreal, returns to his native land to prepare a report for an American economic intelligence firm. Meanwhile, a shadowy, threatening figure imprisoned in an island cell seems to know Djibril’s every move. He takes dictation from his preaching cellmate known as his “Venerable Master,” but as the words are put on the page, a completely different text appears—the life of Walter Benjamin, Djibril’s favorite author.
Passage of Tears cleverly mixes many genres and forms of writing—spy novel, political thriller, diary (replete with childhood memories), travel notebook, legends, parables, incantations, and prayers. Djibril’s reminiscences provide a sense of Djibouti’s past and its people, while a satire of Muslim fundamentalism is unwittingly delivered through the other Djiboutian voice.

In the intervening half century, The Caine Mutiny has become a perennial favorite of readers young and old, has sold millions of copies throughout the world, and has achieved the status of a modern classic.

By:
Gao Xingjian
Type:
Book
Year:
1997
Language:

Souvenirs Pieux

By:
Marguerite Yourcenar
Type:
Book
Year:
1974
Language:

Estimated availability:
