Based on the Prix Goncourt winning novel The Great Swindle by Pierre Lemaître (the best-selling author of the Camille Verhoeven series), Au revoir là-haut (See you up there) is a somptuous period drama in the great French tradition of A Very Long Engagement and La Vie en Rose.

Winner of five César Awards including Best Production Design, Best Costumes Design and Best Adapted Screenplay, Au revoir là-haut fades up a few days before Armistice, when Edouard (BPM's Nahuel Perez Biscayart)saves Albert's (Albert Dupontel, 9-month Stretch) life.

Condemned to live, the two misfits mount a monumental scam to put things right, which puts them in the scope of corrupt army officer Henri d'Aulnay-Pradelle (Laurent Lafitte, Elle) and Edouard's wealthy banker father, Marcel (Niels Arestrup, A prophet). Before the screen fades out, our heroes go through a monumental and colourful journey through France during the Roaring Twenties that you will never forget.

1971, Delphine (Izia Higelin) a twenty-something farm girl of humble means, takes a huge step by packing up and moving to Paris, searching for independence and a life beyond the duties of her rural upbringing. It's not long before she is drawn to dynamic thirty-something Carole (Cecile de France) who is actively involved in the emerging feminist movement. Carole lives with her boyfriend, but the two women quickly fall head over heels, and become inseparable. Their bliss is interrupted, however, when a family emergency forces Delphine back to the farm and to her mother (Noemie Lvovsky), and Carole decides to follow her. There, the couple has to face a far different family.

Featuring stunning production design that indelibly captures both the beauty of the French regions and the vibrant streets of PAris in the 70's, the film invites audiences to bask in the glow of a fledgling yet all-consuming passion, in all its throes. With radiant performances and impeccable direction, La belle saison is French cinema at its absolute finest.

The charming town Mêle-sur-Sarthe, Normandy, is in crisis. Dairy and livestock prices have plummeted due to a flood of imports, and farmers are threatened with foreclosure. Mayor Georges Balbuzard (The Untouchables's François Cluzet) does his best to fight and raise awareness of their plight but the situation isn't deemed newsworthy for national media.

Things seem hopeless...until the day famous American photographer Newman (Toby Jones) passes through the village, inadvertently discovering the perfect backdrop for his next shoot. Balbuzard sees a rare opportunity, and sets about convincing the townsfolk - the farmers, the butcher, the pharmacist, some 200 in all - to participate. But there's a catch.

Boasting superb performances and conveying a rich sense of place, Le Guay's wonderful ensemble delivers a memorable and touching portrait of community, resilience and fraternité, and a hugely enjoyable experience for film-lovers of all shapes and sizes.

Language:
French (France)

Unable to find work in his field, Joseph Ponthus enlists with a temp agency and starts to pick up casual shifts in the fish processing plants and abattoirs of Brittany. Day after day he records with infinite precision the nature of work on the production line- the noise, the weariness, the dreams stolen by the repetitive nature of exhausting rituals and physical suffering. But he finds solace in a life previously lived. Shelling prawns, he dreams of Alexandre Dumas. Pushing cattle carcasses, he recalls Apollinaire. And, in the grace of the blank spaces created by his insistent return to a new line of text - mirroring his continued return to the production line - we discover the woman he loves, the happiness of a Sunday, Pok Pok the dog, the smell of the sea.

In this celebrated French bestseller, translated by Stephanie Smee, Ponthus captures the mundane, the beautiful and the strange, writing with an elegance and humour that sit in poignant contrast with the blood and sweat of the factory floor. On the Line ( la ligne) is a poet's ode to manual labour, and to the human spirit that makes it bearable.

Le désert de L'amour

de l'Académie française

By:
François Mauriac
Type:
Book
Year:
1925
Language:
French (France)
Estimated availability:

In The Desert of Love, we find two men in love with the same woman: a boy of seventeen and his father, who is fifty-two. Neither gets it, and neither can forget it. This woman, Maria Cross, is a small bourgeois who, out of laziness and a taste for luxury, has become a well-kept woman. People speak of her with contempt and as a monster of science and perversity. When Raymond Courrèges meets her, at the end of his adolescence, he finds with amazement a small, ordinary and sentimental being, eager for consideration that we are not used to granting him. Raymond shows him an easy banter and gets kicked out, despite Maria's very lively taste of her youth and freshness. During this time, she herself is loved by Doctor Courrèges, who is her doctor. But she has for him those feelings of deference and respect which are very far from love, and he himself, despite the torture he experiences, cannot pass from this state of serious and fatherly counselor to that of lovers. passionate or transfixed. He suffers in silence and we know of few paintings more moving of love than that of this mr, serious, thoughtful man, whom anguish torments and who is forced to live among his family, in the starchy atmosphere of a provincial family, where each one observes, watches over each other, teases each other and never tells each other the truth. At the end of the book, Maria Cross married her lover, and she became a definitely inaccessible bourgeois. But between the father and the son Courrèges was woven a secret and deeply alive bond: "They are parents by Maria Cross."

Year:
1964
Language:

The complex moral ambiguities of seduction and revenge make Les Liaisons dangereuses (1782) one of the most scandalous and controversial novels in European literature. The subject of major film and stage adaptations, the novel's prime movers, the Vicomte de Valmont and the Marquise de Merteuil, form an unholy alliance and turn seduction into a game - a game which they must win. This new translation gives Laclos a modern voice, and readers will be able a judge whether the novel is as "diabolical" and "infamous" as its critics have claimed, or whether it has much to tell us about the kind of world we ourselves live in. David Coward's introduction explodes myths about Laclos's own life and puts the book in its literary and cultural context

this book is really captivating, we must not focus on the summary on the back of the book, at the beginning I was quite skeptical but when I devoured volume 1 I absolutely wanted to know the rest and since there are 17 tomes in the saga is that of happiness. The book is generally about James, an 11-year-old who lives with his sister Loren and his mother, who is obese; he also has a father-in-law who visits once or twice a week, in the story he is a real rubbish and we can confirm it [...] I will not tell everything because otherwise there would be no surprises at the time of reading. Joy, sadness, humor ... To put it simply, buy this book and you won't regret it, and I hope I helped you with your purchase.
