Alliance Française Palmerston North is proud to present the 2026 Edition of the Francophone Film Festival in celebration of French Language and Francophonie month in New Zealand.

Francophone films will be screened in French with English subtitles at the Globe Theatre from Friday 20 to Sunday 29  March. 🎬

10 films will be shown over 10 days. Comedies, dramas, thrillers, family movies and more, there will be something for everyone!

Francophone Film Festival 2026 - Opening Night - Bergers (Shepherds)

Alliance Française Palmerston North is proud to present the 2026 Edition of the Francophone Film Festival in celebration of French Language and Francophonie Month in New Zealand.

We sincerely thank the High Commission of Canada in New Zealand for their generous support!

The Festival will open with French Canadian film BERGERS (SHEPHERDS) on Friday 20 March at 6 pm at The Globe Theatre, 312 Main St, Palmerston North.

Mathyas, an aspiring writer, trades his life in Montreal as a young advertising executive for that of a shepherd in the South of France. But the road to his desired pastoral tranquillity is filled with hard work. A visit from Elise, a civil servant who boldly quit her job, gives Mathyas' quest a new direction. Together, they embark on a transhumance. Facing the challenges of the mountains, with a herd to take care of, they will forge a new life for themselves.

The drama UN AMOUR IMPOSSIBLE (AN IMPOSSIBLE LOVE) will be screened at The Globe Theatre, 312 Main St, Palmerston North on:

At the end of the 1950s, Rachel, a young office clerk living in a provincial town, meets Philippe, a well-educated man from a wealthy family. They share an intense but short-lived romance from which a daughter is born. Over the next 50 years, their lives will be shaped by the unconditional love between a mother and her daughter, overshadowed by the impossible love of a woman for a man who rejects her, and of a daughter for an absent and abusive father.

Lucien is a young unknown poet in 19th-century France. He has great expectations and wants to forge a destiny. A human comedy where everything is bought and sold, literature as well as the press, politics as well as feelings, reputations as well as souls. He will love, he will suffer, and survive his illusions. An adaptation of Honoré de Balzac's famous novel "Les illusions perdues".

The Festival's closing night with the film LE ROMAN DE JIM (JIM'S STORY) will be on Sunday 29 March at 6 pm at The Globe Theatre, 312 Main St, Palmerston North.

Aymeric runs into Florence, a former coworker, one evening in Saint-Claude in the Haut-Jura. She is six months pregnant and single. When she gives birth to Jim, Aymeric is there. They spend happy years together until Christophe, Jim's biological father, shows up... It could be the start of a melodrama, it's also the start of an odyssey into fatherhood.
